On Wednesday, February 14th 2024, I had the opportunity to visit Oglethorpe University with a business colleague - ( Dr. Elie Kabwende) to hear the lecture of Dekalb County CEO, Michael L. Thurmond. On this date, Oglethorpe University presented Oglethorpe Day.
"Oglethorpe Day
honors our university's namesake, James Edward Oglethorpe. Held in
February, Oglethorpe Day commemorates the anniversary of General
Oglethorpe's arrival in the new world in Savannah, Ga. Each year the
festivities begin with the exciting Petrels of Fire race."

Dekalb County CEO, Michael L. Thurmond lecture was regarding the founder,
" James Oglethorpe on February 12, 1733, the Georgia colony that he
envisioned as a unique social welfare experiment. Administered by
twenty-one original trustees, the Georgia Plan offered England’s “worthy
poor” and persecuted Christians an opportunity to achieve financial
security in the New World by exporting goods produced on small farms.
Most significantly, Oglethorpe and his fellow Trustees were convinced
that economic vitality could not be achieved through the exploitation of
enslaved Black laborers."
