The History of Collier Heights

by C. Henry Adams

My parents (Marion Lewis Adams, Sr. & Emma King Smith Adams) taught me to learn from whence you come from to know where you are going.  (Or)  If you make four turns to the right or left while traveling in unfamiliar places or circumstances; it is likely you will complete a circle.

So, with great understanding of simplicity - Life is a Circle.

From the 1830's to 2019, we will briefly identify the History of Collier Heights area.  Note: The Collier Heights Community was proposed and implemented during the 51st tenure of City of Atlanta's Mayor William Berry Hartsfield while in office from 1941- 1961.

Utilizing Interstate 20 and Interstate 285 to create quadrants; the entire Collier Heights Community landscape is outline.  From left to right, starting with Quadrant 4 (Carroll Heights Neighborhood), the community extends to Quadrant 1 ( H. E. Holmes Drive).  From right to left (bottom right corner of image below) , Quadrant 2  connects to Quadrant 3 along Martin Luther King Jr Drive to Adamsville, Ga.

                            (1962 - 2013)

In 2013, the area identified as Quadrant 1 (See Image below) possessing the zip code 30318 was designated historical. It is quite unfortunate, because the original Collier Heights Area consist of two additional zip codes; 30311 & 30331 which is Adamsville, Ga. This covered 4,000 acres of land.

(Collier Heights Proposed Plan of 1961)

Before Collier Heights

Before there was a modern-day village called, 'Collier Heights' proposed in 1948, there was Adamsville, Georgia incorporated into a City in 1906.  Although, the name was given to this village in and around 1870 as a result of Farmer George W. Adams settling there.

( 1883 Georgia Map displaying dissolved Campbell County which now Fulton County. )

The aforementioned small town was once a cross-road settlement entrenched near the Chattahoochee River called, ' Lick Skillet '.

Located near the border of Fulton & Campbell County, Georgia in 1883; very little history today is known by its current inhabitants.

Fore, Campbell County, Georgia no longer exist; it was dissolved and now is the lower portion of Fulton County.  It is allege that Campbell County, Georgia did not want the railroad running through
it, thus turning away growth, industry & technology.

The Lick Skillet Settlement survived a Civil War Battle which occurred on Lick Skillet Road on July 28th 1864.

The article shared above points out a number of clues to the Lick Skillet Road Civil War Battle in 1864 that occurred and possibly allude to an answer of unmarked graves found in woods near  Baker's Ferry Road 2013 - 2018.

At a certain point in time, this road was also named Gordon Road or today - Ralph Abernathy Blvd & a larger portion is Martin Luther King Jr Dr that extend to the Chattahoochee River.

Source: http://chazzcreations.com/thomasshawlangstonscottrobertsdell_family_connections/joseph_shaw__lick_skillet__cohutta__red_clay_georgia

The Lick Skillet Settlement survived a Typhoid Fever Outbreak in 1853.
Prior to the Treaty of New Echota of December 29th 1835, gold was discovered in North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga), as well as, West Georgia (Villa Rica, Ga).  This caused an economic boom for this precious mineral to occur and the disruption of Native American lives.

Before the misbegotten treaty mentioned above; in 1832, American Indians (Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole, among other Nations) were forced to move away from their lands which included the border of the Cherokee Nation (Now Cobb, Campbell & several other counties.) which was near the Lick Skillet Settlement.

( North Georgia in 1834;  Atlanta, Ga / Fulton County did not exist,
but Decatur, Ga / Dekalb County was present. )

During the 1830's, Atlanta, Georgia, as well as, Fulton County did not exist.  In their place were an extended version of Dekalb County, the forgotten seat of Campbell County with Fayette County following closely behind.  Today, what vast areas of land these counties once possess are now other counties such as Fulton, Cobb and Douglas Counties.

It's interesting to note that Campbell County measurements, mass & shape changed several times from 1828 to 1870. During that period of time Cherokee Nation northwestern land, developed into many Georgia Counties over a period of 42 years.

Campbell County was established December 20th 1828 and on January 1, 1932 finally merged with Fulton County, Georgia.

A major change or alteration occurred in the area of what is now known as Collier Heights starting in the 1830's, 1850's, 1860's, 1880's, 1900's, 1950's, 1962-2012 and from 2013-2019.

So, what is the point of this discussion? Making things different is not always acceptable.  But, if we are to continue to develop, while building on great things in our individual lives, families and societies; then evolving into the future is imperative.

(North Georgia prior to December 29, 1835. The red circle identify where Collier Heights is currently located.)

Well, thanks for reading this blog.  We welcome your thoughts and comments.

Order of (5) Five Priorities in Life

by C. Henry Adams

When I was a child growing up in my modern-day tribe called,
' Kevin Heights Neighborhood ' of the village called, ' Collier Heights ' of Atlanta, Ga USA; I heard my parents often say this,  " Boy,  you better get your priorities straight or in order! "Of course, I asked quietly to myself under my breath, " What are priorities? "

It turns out that priority in its singular form; is anything that you regard as being important.

That being said, there are many priorities in all our daily lives.  But, for the sake of time, which happens to be a manageable priority (LOL), I will just focus on (5) five priorities.

Those items are; Spiritual Guidance, Mental Stability, Physical Stability, Self Sufficiency and Family.

When one thinks of the management of their individual life, position in life, authority as a leader ( Business, Non-Profit Organization or Community), perhaps they should order their steps while living.

Basically, the arrangement or disposition of the (5) five items could help create a positive system in one's life to exist well.

Order of Priority

1)  Spiritual Guidance: Each living creature on Earth possess some type of animation or motion while alive. But, it would seem odd to actually see a living being without a spirit. Fore, human beings appear to behave uniquely.  Could we assume that how we conduct oneself goes beyond our earthly & scientific knowledge, as well as, understanding? If this is possible, then seeking wisdom and insight from beyond might be worth consideration.

2)  Mental Stability: To possess the abilities to learn;  to be able to feel, express and manage a range of positive and negative emotions.  To become a ' People's Person ' (People skills or soft skills) or consider developing relationships with people is beneficial. Learn to cope with and manage change and uncertainty.

3)  Physical Stability:  To possess the ability to maintain a physically fit body while practicing good health.  This is coupled by getting sleep and eating healthy to say the very least, fore,
there are many other health related factors to consider.

4)
Self Sufficiency:  To possess the ability to satisfy one's own basic needs (e.g.  Earn income to satisfy one's needs, feed & take care of self, etc.)

5)

Family:  To possess the ability to take care of one's family basic needs (e.g.  Earn income to satisfy family needs, feed & take care of family, etc.)

Perhaps, there are no perfect individuals or people on this Earth.  Therefore, let's consider that when you place the above mentioned priorities in the particular order from 1 to 5 of importance, things will not be the same for everyone.

However, should you pray while maintaining a positive mental attitude, then implementing some type of physical works to 1st help yourself, then others; good things may occur.

Just a thought process.  What do you say or think?

Thanks!

Reflecting on what Father's Day means to Me

Marion Lewis Adams, Sr.
1923 - 1995

It was the Summer of 1979 and 12 months had passed since my brother Marion Lewis Adams, Jr. passed away while serving in the US Army.

Sadden by his death, yet, determine to move forward in life, my parents were outgoing people.

This particular year and season, my Father decided to take my Mother, my nephew and myself on a journey from the State of Georgia to California via car.

This journey took us through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California.   To name a few memorable sites; we saw where JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. We ate Buffalo Burgers in Arizona.  We drove through the desert without air condition per advice of a Gas Station Attendant. We heard, ' Tie a yellow ribbon around the ole oak tree ' a thousand times on the radio during travel.  (LOL)  We visited Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.  We drove by a Car Wash in Los Angeles, California that reminded us of the 1976 Movie named 'Car Wash'.  We cross the Golden Gate Bridge to the disappointment of my nephew, fore, it did not appear gold, but red instead. We rode the San Francisco Street Cars or Trolleys.

Perhaps, this unique venture was a pivotal moment in life for all of us.

In fact, when I pass by the Atlantic Station in Downtown Atlanta, I don't always glance at its wonders.

Why? Well, before there was an Atlantic Station, there once was an Atlantic Steel Plant.  It was where my father worked over 30 years for this company from a switch-man in the Norfolk-Southern Railroad yard to a local Locomotive Engineer employed to ship in and out steel.

I recall when he once was a Crane Operator for the aforementioned; moving scrap metal from bucket rail-cars,when the boon of the crane fell backward on him nearly taking his life.   Yet, as a US Veteran & Montford Point Marine (USMC), his motto was to finish what you start while never giving up the fight.

I realized that I slightly jumped off the tangent here, therefore, allow me to realign.

I would summarize that memories of my late Father aren't a once a year thing.

Fore, I reflect on his ordinary capability to do extraordinary things in life daily.

That being said, if you are a Father or even a Mother, please don't think for once you struggle alone or that your struggles to move forward in life are fruitless.

Yes, struggling is real, but the love, devotion and commitment you give your children are too.

Please continue to be blessed and a blessing to others knowingly or unknowingly.

Happy Father's Day!

A Quick Review of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Small Business Exchange and Matchmaking Event - Atl, GA GSU 060519

by C. Henry Adams

I will be the first to admit that we are all human, therefore due diligence must apply in all aspects of doing business.

Having attended a prior engagement on Wednesday June 5th 2019, I missed two things on the program agenda: 1) Opening Remarks and  2)  How to Do Business with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ("NRC").

I can hear someone say, ' So why am I reading your blog at this point!? '

Answer:  Because, all was not completely loss, IF you arrived late to the event.

In fact, the NRC was quite prepared to accommodate Contractors or Small Businesses with Personnel that was disabled by blindness or were deaf to say the very least.

I was impressed with the Networking Break and Expand Your Small Business Growth with Government Agencies on the Agenda. (A deaf-interpreter was on duty.)

The NRC left business cards on the display table embossed in braille for the blind.   Furthermore, the NRC left a three mini disc pamphlet set that possess 2011-2012 Information Digest, Strategic Plan Fiscal Years 2008-2013 and 'Making Our Business Your Business'.

This organization greatly impressed myself by providing seven overall opportunities: 1) contact information for the NRC, 2) research information on the NRC , 3) the ability to do business with the NRC, 4) CDC - U.S. Center for Disease Control, 5)  GSA - U.S. General Service Administration , 6)  the Fulton County Georgia Government and finally - 7) the ability to network with other companies.

Much appreciation goes out to Georgia State University for accommodating this event.

Thanks!

A Quick Review of R.E.V.I.V.E. City of Atlanta Business Expo 2019

by C. Henry Adams

Having pursued the chance to contract with the City of Atlanta with no immediate success and great difficulty years ago; I was weary regarding visiting the 2019 City of Atlanta Business Expo.

Nevertheless, the Georgia World Congress Center was an ideal location for an expo.

It was a honor to standby when Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made her entrance with entourage.

I thought the continental  breakfast was nice.

Also, a chance to network with Other Local Government Entities, Non-Profit Entities, For-Profit Companies and Business Owners was nice too.

As an early morning riser, I'm learning that being  ' On Time means to be ahead of time, period. '

If one steps into an Expo Hall when it officially opens and the exhibitors are still setting up exhibits or have yet to arrive, what should be interpret?

Pressed for time, I did not make an attempt to visit any break-out sessions.

Final comment:  Due diligence must apply in all aspects of doing business.

Thanks!

The Importance of BGP or Border Gateway Protocol to Telecommunications

by C. Henry Adams

Imagine for a moment that you own a smartphone or cellular phone that access the Internet, not to mention - allowed you to receive or send video images of yourself (Telecom & Video Caller A) to another individual (Telecom & Video Caller B)  to say the very less.

OK, its Sunday, June 9th 2019, this mere technology just mention is no longer a figment of the imagination, but a reality.

That being said, I can hear those of my generation saying, " DUH "  or another generation saying, " REALLY C. Henry !? ".

(LOL)

Well, here is my poignant statement,  " Pay close attention to high technology and learn all that you can about it. "

Why?  Well, from an ordinary person, investor and business owner point of view; it is important to identify what could have vast effects on your daily life, investments or business.

So, speaking in those regards from a telecommunications stand point; when a little bird tweets on your screen regarding information that's not fake news in reference to technology, whether it be on your desktop computer, laptop computer, electronic tablet, smartphone, smartwatch, video game, in your vehicle or even IoT Household appliances; take a moment to read or listen for comprehension.

So, what is the end game of this discussion?   Answer: Learn about BGP or Border Gateway Protocol.

What?   BGP is a large scale Internet Protocol utilized to exchange routing and other information among autonomous systems (AS) on the Internet.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Gateway_Protocol

Quick Example: BGP Technology allows you (Telecom & Video Caller A) to speak /Video chat with that person (Telecom & Video Caller B) who is visiting Europe from the US with the new smartcard chip they just purchased prior to riding the local train in Paris, France.

Looking In The Wrong Direction

by C. Henry Adams

In the form of a cliché;  I heard someone say, " Man, close your eyes, because you are looking in the wrong direction. "

How many times have we all looked in the wrong direction in life?

To even try and grasp the thought or understand the statement above, perhaps, there is a need to define it first.

Consider the meaning of  ' Close your eyes, because you are looking in the wrong direction ' to say that you are pursuing an answer to a problem while seeking the wrong steps to resolve it.

Perhaps, if we live a lifetime from birth to old age, there are (4) four events within our life-cycle that we may or may not experience on this Earth.  It is likely, that we will not have control over each of the following circumstances:

1)  Our own Childhood Development
2)  The likelihood of one or more disasters occurring of some magnitude.
3)  A form of despair with hope restored.
4)  Our own Old Age

The inability to control fate filled moments could be terrifying to think about, but I would like to encourage you NOT to fear.

Instead, take a moment when one of the (4) four events mentioned above occur. Close your eyes to look within oneself for hope & expectation of positive changes while believing beyond one's conjecture to move forward.  Fore, prayer surely changes things.

Thanks!

3 of 3 Series : A Wise Dividend Growth Investor (Wealth Building)

by C. Henry Adams

On Sunday, April 21st 2019, I was invited to attend dinner with Family & Friends as a Guest.  Because I did not get permission or authorization from my Hosts to mention their names prior to writing this blog, I will not mention their names at this time.

Nevertheless, following the great meal, I had the opportunity to set down with the Lady of the Home and her Colleague & Visitor, Mr. Larry Bennett.

What thought struck me in my mind regarding the Gentleman was that he built mainframe computers for IBM 42 years ago.

Well, 42 years ago was 1977.   I was not old enough to drive a car or pretty much do anything else as a 7 year old.

As I sat with a closed mouth and open ears listening to two renown individuals ( the Lady of the House & Larry Bennett ) converse regarding their accomplishments, I was impressed.

OK, I'm going to shorten the story due to my long tale telling capabilities.

So, there I was observing two 'Liked Minds' or Brilliant Business People.  It was like watching ordinary People who do extra ordinary things.

Mr. Bennett is a Wise Dividend Growth Investor.  Yeah, yeah, you have heard of Warren Buffett, but it is not often we encounter these Investment Gurus up close like Larry Bennett.

What stood out about his character that goes along with his intelligence was the fact that he was down-to-earth and willing to educate anyone seeking to learn about investments.

Here are some thoughts to ponder regarding the wise advice of  Mr. Larry Bennett:

  • Try to save 10% of your earnings.
  •  Become an avid reader regarding Business & Finance.
  • Set a goal to obtain a number of shares of a particular company.
  • Perform thorough research regarding companies in stock markets; know what you are
getting into prior to involving oneself.
  • Consider choosing 7 companies that yield or pay dividends.
  • Observation or Due Diligence of each selected organization's growth for a 10 year period should be applied.
  • Consider discussing the Finance Markets with 'Liked Minds' or Brilliant Business People, privately.
  • Spend time with your Family and balance your life.

Finally, to close out this series of 'Wealth Building', please understanding that wealth encompass many more things, then shared in these three (3) blogs:

However, if I was to take one term from each of these blog articles regarding this series to make a final statement, it would be:

Consider teaming while building a reputation of being an asset to a community where you receive dividends in your business, as well as, others.

Thanks!

2 of 3 Series: Assets & Liabilities (Wealth Building)

by C. Henry Adams

According to Investopedia,  asset is a resource with economic value that an individual, corporation or country owns or controls with the expectation that it will provide a future benefit. Assets are reported on a company's balance sheet and are bought or created to increase a firm's value or benefit the firm's operations.  https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/asset.asp

Furthermore, Investopedia define the term liability as a company's legal financial debts or obligations that arise during the course of business operations.  https://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/liability.asp

I recall hearing a very good,  Big Brother Mentor make a profound statement. He said,  " You are either an Asset to someone or a liability.  Once you become liable, your services are no longer useful. "   Dannie James, Sr.

Warning:  This statement could perhaps be interpret in multiple ways.  But, for the purpose of this blog, let's identify a company or organization as a whole being either an Asset or Liability.

Nevertheless, when one recalls the above quote; a flurry of thoughts trickle down within my mind.

These terms & phrases appear as such below:

  • Ethics
  • Ethical Practices
  • Best Practices ( BP )
  • Integrity
  • Speaking or addressing an issue in a professional forthright tone
  • Utilizing Tact
  • Utilizing the three F's technique. ( Feel, Felt & Found)

Ethics & Ethical Practices is having knowledge of the right thing to do while being proactive to resolving incidents or situations to say the least.

An organization utilizing ' Best Practices '  ,whereas, regulations, rules, laws or guidelines are implemented regularly, should consider this a high priority.

Integrity should be attributed throughout a company's BP.  Perhaps, a Company's Spokesperson should always speak or address an issue in a professional forthright tone.

Often times, emotional circumstances could elicit behavior unbecoming; utilizing tact is imperative.

Finally, pro-activity helps prepare an establishment for the unexpected.  Utilizing the three F's technique ( Feel, Felt & Found) when conceivably available to resolve an issue; helps
builds business relationships.

Please understanding that wealth encompass many more things, then shared in these three (3) blogs:
